On being a swim mom, a room mom, a wife, a mother, a sister, a friend…

Party Planning for the almost-8-year-old!

We are planning a birthday party!  In just a few shorts days, my youngest will be 8!

After offering a few suggestions, he came up with an idea of his own.  He would like a Wii Bowling Party.  That I can do!

Of course, Pinterest has some wonderful suggestions for just such a party:

We will be keeping it small, but I see balloon streamers, red and white paper straws, and oreo bowling balls in my future!

Making Valentine’s Day Special

In the span of 5 days, our house will celebrate Mardi Gras, Valentine’s Day, and an 8th birthday.  Craziness.

I really don’t want Valentine’s Day to get lost in the middle of all these other celebrations.  You see, Valentine’s Day is not all about red and pink and hearts and chocolates and such at our house.  Instead, the days around Valentine’s Day mark some very special days of remembrance and celebrating for us:

  • 4 years ago, Grandpa died on February 12 and at his funeral on the 14th, we received so many blessings of love from family and friends.
  • 2 years ago, Christopher was baptized on February 13 after giving his heart to Jesus.
  • 1 year ago, Addie accepted Jesus into her heart the night of February 14th after she began to understand His Unconditional Love.

To celebrate these special moments, and acknowledge the ‘holiday’ that is St. Valentine’s Day, I decided to offer my family something different this year.  We are sending valentines to each other every day this month.  (I’ll admit, it also has a few more advantages like no extra candy to tempt me and forcing a certain tween to think of nice things to say to an obnoxious little brother!)

We each have a little mail box on the piano.  At some point in the day, each person must leave a ‘love’ note for another person.  I’ve got a bag stashed with paper, scissors, stickers, pins, and glue ready for them to grab something and whip up a note.

So far, there have been the classics (“You’re the best mom EVER” and “I love you”), the unimaginative (“Happy February”), and the subtle hints (“I love you Mom and I wish we could have your yummy pound cake after school.”)  This could get really interesting!!!

Valentine’s Day 2012

Yes, I know that this post is a week late. But…I needed to savor God’s amazing glory just a bit before I shared with you.

If you’ve followed along with any of my blogs, you might have guessed that Valentine’s Day is bittersweet for me.

The bitter:  Late at night on Thursday, February 12, 2008, my Grandpa E went to be with Jesus. We held his funeral and burial on Saturday, Valentine’s Day 2009. It was a really sad day, but also a wonderful day of memories, filled with love from family and friends.

The sweet: Last year, on January 12, 2010 (both my Grandmother’s and my Grandmother-in-Law’s birthday), my sweet little boy told me that he wanted to ask Jesus to come live his his heart. C followed through with his public declaration of faith with a baptism on February 13, 2010!!

The sweetest yet: Late Tuesday night, after a crazy day of Valentines, swim practice and homework, my Big Girl and I talked about God’s amazing mercy, His great plans for us, and His Son. She told me that she’d been thinking a lot about God and Jesus and asked me to leave her room while she “had a talk with Jesus”. A few minutes later, she came into the kitchen and whispered to her Daddy the sweetest words that a parent can hear: I just ask Jesus to be my Lord and Savior.

On a day when the world often gets carried away with pink and red and hearts and chocolates, we celebrate too! We share our love with each other and with friends for 1 reason: Because He first loved us!

I participated in a craft swap with Andrea. She sent me this beautiful heart print for Valentine’s Day. I know that she probably had no clue what God had in store for my Valentine’s Day, but this small piece of art will forever be a reminder of the day that God changed one very special heart!

Sometimes, Something’s Gotta Give, But That’s Okay

So….I’m sure you noticed that it was exactly 2 weeks between my last post and the birthday post yesterday. Why? Well, I have a small confession to make. As much as I like to pretend that I’m a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants, roll-with-it kinda gal, I’m not!!

Hi! I’m Salinda and I need my routine. Desperately!

We’ve just had a few weeks of a slightly different schedule and it’s thrown me for a loop. My husband’s work schedule was a little different. The kids swam on days they have piano, ran on days they had swimming, and had piano on days we aren’t supposed to do anything.

Just keeping up with all the changes really messed with my head. So…somethings had to give. So-called priorities were pushed to the back burner. Homework was done, meals were prepared, church was attended. Orders were completed and mailed, classes were taught, hugs and kisses and lego-building was done. On the other hand, laundry piled up, floors weren’t washed, toys weren’t always put away, and dishes sat in the sink-overnight! Twice! The blog sat neglected, as did some of the Valentine’s ideas (but not all, I’ll show those to you later).

You see, I decided that I would focus my energies on the things that mattered. Yes, we did have clean clothes to wear and our house never really got that dirty. More than once, I did feel guilty for not doing something I really, really thought I should. But…in the end, I decided that my husband mattered (and his lunches and dinners) and my kids mattered and my Jesus mattered. The rest would come when life settled back down.

I was reminded of these verses from Matthew:

25 “This is why I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they? 27 Can any of you add a single cubit to his height by worrying? 28 And why do you worry about clothes? Learn how the wildflowers of the field grow: they don’t labor or spin thread. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these! 30 If that’s how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, won’t He do much more for you—you of little faith? 31 So don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ 32 For the idolaters eagerly seek all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. 34 Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.  Matthew 6:25-34 HCSB

Much like those peach blossoms in the picture above and the wildflowers mentioned in the verses, God has provided for me.  He sent the bees to pollinate the flowers in January.  IN JANUARY!!  Where is it warm enough for bees in January???  In Shreveport, Louisiana, I suppose.  And those bees set to work on the one task they were given.  That what I decided to do.  If God would take care of the peach blossoms in January, how much more will He take care of me?  If those bees can defy the seasons to do their God-given task, then I can ignore the extra and focus on my priorities.  And, there would be no need to worry about the guilt of not mopping or keeping the laundry pile small or not blogging.   There would be time to share with you again when our schedule settled back down.
