Sewing Classes in Shreveport

Live in the Shreveport/Bossier City area and want to learn to sew?  I am offering the following sewing classes in Shreveport and Bossier this winter and spring:

If you are brand new to sewing:

  • Get to Know Your Sewing Machine at LSUS on January 19, 9-noon
  • Sewing Basics at BPCC on January 26 and February 2, 6-9pm
  • Get to Know Your Sewing Machine at LSUS on January 30, 6-9pm
  • Get to Know Your Sewing Machine at LSUS on February 23, 6-9pm
  • Get to Know Your Sewing Machine at LSUS on April 11, 9-noon
  • Sewing Basics at BPCC on April 20 and 27, 6-9pm

If you know how to thread your machine and are confident sewing a straight seam:

  • What Else Can Your Machine Do? At LSUS on January 26, 9-noon
  • What Else Can Your Machine Do? At LSUS on January 31, 6-9pm
  • What Else Can Your Machine Do? At LSUS on March 9, 6-9pm
  • What Else Can Your Machine Do? At LSUS on April 18 9-noon

If you know how to thread your machine, you are confident using your machine, and you are ready to learn to read a pattern:

  • Learn to Read a Pattern at LSUS on February 14, 9am-1pm
  • Learn to Read a Pattern at LSUS on March 13 & 14, 6-8pm
  • Perfect Pillow at LSUS on March 16, 9-11am

Beginning Sewing (Getting to Know Your Sewing Machine at LSUS and Sewing Basics 1 at BPCC):  If you’ve never used a sewing machine before, this is the class for you.  Learn how to thread the machine, fill a bobbin, balance the tension, and sew a straight seam.  Create a finished pillowcase while you practice.  You can bring your own sewing machine or use one of the machines provided.  Supplies:  Three (3) pieces coordinating 100% cotton quilting fabric in the following amounts:  Fabric 1 (1yd), Fabric 2 (1/2 yd), Fabric 3 (1/4 yd); all-purpose thread; sewing shears; straight pins; size 11 universal sewing machine needles; sewing machine and manual. Machines are provided at LSUS.

Pillowcase dress  If you’ve never used your sewing machine before, or if you only know the basics, this is the class for you! I’ll be teaching you how to thread your machine, wind a bobbin, cut your fabric, and sew a straight stitch!  Supplies:  You’ll need 1 yard of cute cotton fabric (1 1/2 yard if you are making a size larger than a 5) and 2 yards of 3/8 inch grosgrain ribbon. You’ll also need your sewing machine, straight pins, its manual, needles, bobbins, sewing scissors, and a spool of thread.

Beginning Sewing, Part 2 (What else can your sewing machine do? at LSUS and Sewing Basics II at BPCC): Learn how to use your machine’s settings and presser feet to create beautiful topstitching, finished edges, ruffles, gathers, and pleats.  Practice while you create a simple tote bag.  You can bring your own sewing machine or use one of the machines provided. (Please note, you must already have a basic knowledge of a sewing machine.)  Supplies:  Two (2) pieces 100% cotton quilting fabric in the following amounts:  fabric 1 (1 1/2 yd), fabric 2 (1/2 yd); all-purpose thread; sewing shears; straight pins; size 11 universal sewing machine needles; sewing machine and manual. Machines are provided at LSUS.

Ruffle Pant  Learn to make ruffles, hems, and casings as you make a pair of these darling little girls’ pants.  Supplies:  You’ll need 1 yard of cute cotton fabric (1 1/2 yard if you are making a size larger than a 5) and 1/2 yard of a coordinating cotton fabric for your ruffle.  You’ll also need your sewing machine, straight pins, its manual, needles, bobbins, sewing scissors, and a spool of thread.  A rotary cutter and self healing mat are handy, but not required.

 

Learn to Read a Pattern:  Grainlines, tissue patterns, notches and dots.  Put all these things together to create a pair of pajama pants.  We will also discuss casings, hems, and elastic.  You can bring your own sewing machine or use one of the machines provided.  (Please note, you must already have a basic knowledge of a sewing machine.)  Supplies: Pattern for pajama pants (elastic waist, with or without drawstring); fabric (amount specified on pattern envelope); 2 yards 1/2 inch wide elastic; all-purpose thread; sewing shears; straight pins; size 11 universal sewing machine needles; sewing machine and manual. Machines are provided at LSUS.

The Emmaline Dress:  Learn to read a pattern while making this darling maxi dress for girls.  More details and the supply list to come.

Curtains and Pillows!  Most curtains and pillows are simple straight seams.  Learn the basic formulas and methods for creating cafe curtains, panels, and pillows.  You can bring your own sewing machine or use one of the machines provided.  (Please note, you must already have a basic knowledge of a sewing machine.)  Supplies:  Fabric (1 yd of scrap fabric); graph paper; pencil; ruler; measuring tape; calculator; all-purpose thread; sewing shears; straight pins; size 11 universal sewing machine needles; sewing machine and manual. Machines are provided at LSUS.

Ruffled Throw Pillows:  Learn to make this perfect gift pillow.  Supply list to come.

Using Your Serger!  Learn to thread your serger, balance the tensions of all the threads, gather fabric, and switch between your overcasting stitch and a rolled hem.  Supplies: You’ll need 1/4 yard of white cotton broadcloth, 3/4 yard of a cute cotton fabric, and 1/3 yard of a coordinating cute cotton, 4 spools of thread (1 red, 1 blue, 1 green, and 1 yellow).  You’ll also need your serger and its manual, straight pins, needles, sewing scissors, and a pair of tweezers.

Basic Applique:  Learn to Machine Applique  You can bring your own sewing machine or use one of the machines provided at LSUS.  (Please note, you must already have a basic knowledge of a sewing machine.)  Supplies:  1/2 yard scrap fabric that you be appliquing onto; small fabric scraps in pink, white, mint green, and tan; Heat ‘n Bond LITE: all-purpose thread in pink, white, mint green and tan; sewing shears; straight pins; size 11 universal sewing machine needles; freezer paper or tissue paper (about 24 inches long); pencil; sewing machine and manual. Machines are provided at LSUS.
